CASE STUDY: Australian Whisky Auctions — Product & Bottle Photography

Whisky and spirits product photography for Australian Whisky Auctions

Australian Whisky Auctions is Australia's first specialist auctioneer of whisky and fine spirits, running online auctions every month. Their bidders buy bottles they can't hold, smell or inspect in person. That makes photography the entire product experience — if an image doesn't communicate condition, label detail and rarity, the bid doesn't happen.

We worked with Australian Whisky Auctions for approximately five years, photographing between six and fifteen bottles per shoot on a regular monthly cycle. Lisa Saad, Principal Photographer at Gotham Studios Melbourne, art-directed and shot the full program.

The brief

Build a photography approach that could handle a constantly rotating monthly catalogue of bottles — different shapes, different label stocks, different fill levels — and present each one clearly enough that a collector feels confident placing a bid.

The challenge — glass reflects everything, and the catalogue never repeats

Whisky is one of the hardest product categories to photograph. Glass acts like a mirror, so it picks up the studio, the lights and the photographer. Labels are often aged, foiled or embossed, and collectors judge condition directly from the photo. Liquid colour has to be accurate, because colour signals age and cask type.

The bigger challenge was the cycle. A new set of bottles arrived every month for five years, and no two consignments were the same. Every shoot had to produce images that looked like they belonged to the same auction house as the month before — and the month before that.

How we solved it

We lit each bottle so the glass read as glass — with controlled highlights that describe the shape of the bottle rather than blowing out across it. Labels were lit to hold texture and legibility, including foil and embossing, so a bidder can read a distillery mark and assess wear. Liquid colour was matched to the bottle in front of us rather than pushed for drama, because in this category an inaccurate amber is a misrepresentation.

Because the shoots ran monthly, we built and maintained a consistent setup rather than relighting from scratch each time. That kept the production efficient and, more importantly, meant that five years of catalogue images sit together as one continuous visual standard.

The result

Australian Whisky Auctions built a consistent, professional visual standard across every monthly auction over a five-year working relationship. Images work at thumbnail size in the catalogue grid and hold up when a bidder zooms in on a label. The same files carry across to their social channels and email campaigns.

Why this matters for your brand

If your customer is buying something they can't physically inspect, your photography is your product description. And if you sell on a recurring cycle — monthly drops, seasonal releases, rolling stock — the real value isn't in one great shoot. It's in a setup that can be repeated indefinitely so your catalogue looks like one considered business rather than a hundred different sellers.
